Abstract:Today, as organizations face constant change, they must rapidly adapt their strategies and operations. This involves continuous business transformation. However, guiding and managing such transformation can be an intimidating task because of organizational complexity. Hence, organizations resort to Enterprise Architecture (EA) to address this complexity and achieve their transformation goals. Nonetheless, there is a lack of research on EA benefits realization and a dearth of conclusive evidence on how EA enables business transformation and delivers value to organizations. Therefore, this research uses a case study method to explore how EA investment is converted into organizational value. This research makes two contributions. The first of these is the development of an EA value realization model, which comprises three iterative and interrelated processes: the EA conversion process, the EA use process, and the EA competitive process. An enterprise architecture (EA) is a conceptual blueprint that defines the structure and operation of organizations. The intent of enterprise architecture is to determine how an organization can effectively achieve its current and future objectives. Enterprise architecture involves the practice of analyzing, planning, designing and eventual implementing of analysis on an enterprise.


Concepts of enterprise architecture are variable, so it will not look the same for each organization. Different parts of an organization may also view EA differently. For example, programmers and other technical IT professionals regard enterprise architecture strategies in terms of the infrastructure, application and management components under their control. However, enterprise architects are still responsible for enacting business structure analysis.


Enterprise architecture will help multiple departments in a business understand the broader business model and articulate challenges and business risks. Because of this, enterprise architecture has an important role in unifying and coordinating departmental processes across an organization. Being able to access and understand business capability should also help individuals identify gaps in their business, and from there, they can make more informed decisions.


The main goals of enterprise architecture may be to create a map or blueprint of the structure and operations of an organization. This blueprint should include information such as a map of IT assets and business processes.

The term may have various meanings to professionals in different areas who work with different EA frameworks. For example, programmers and other technical IT professionals regard enterprise architecture strategies in terms of the infrastructure, application and management components under they have control over.


High-level programmers will use enterprise architecture when referring to the hardware and software components in a design. For a website, that might comprise a web server, database, the NoSQL database cache, the API endpoints and the content delivery network.


Others could view enterprise architecture based on quality attributes. These are attributes that must exist for software to work and are unlikely to fit in a specification document. Examples include reliability, capacity, scalability and security. Quality elements are not functional requirements, but are ways to determine acceptable operating conditions and necessary tradeoffs to get there.


Enterprise architecture, in a business context, may have organizations distinguish their enterprise architecture from the technical architecture required to build and run applications. Working from within an enterprise architecture framework will help define this.


Enterprise architectures are typically implemented as frameworks. There are many different frameworks, and some will be a better fit than others when it comes to any one organization. MEGA International, a global software company, has revealed the results of an international study conducted by the Enterprise Strategy Group institute on enterprise architecture trends in 2022. The results show that most organizations still consider enterprise architecture primarily as a department that supports technology instead of seeing it as the essential backbone for business development. For their part, enterprise architects remain optimistic about the evolution of their job and its relevance in organizations.


According to the study results, 44 percent of companies have a vision of enterprise architecture centered on IT compared to 26 percent centered on business. Only 18 percent of architects surveyed say they are systematically consulted on company development projects. However, internal collaborations with enterprise architects mainly concern the security, R&D, and application development departments, areas in which the added value of enterprise architecture no longer needs to be proven.


In particular, the security department recognizes 77 percent of the high added value of EA associated with risk and compliance management (GRC). Similarly, organizations that consider enterprise architecture primarily as technological support recognize 46 percent of its undeniable value in data governance (collection, use, modification, prioritization, security, and confidentiality) as well as for its efficiency in IT cost management.


Furthermore, 80 percent of enterprise architects surveyed say their company still suffers from too many manual processes and 79 percent of them report they have difficulty collaborating across their entire organization. When the main purpose of enterprise architecture is to support the company's businesses and their transformation, it comes up against difficulties related to collaboration with the businesses and objectives that conflict with IT priorities.


Seventy percent of organizations report that their investments in enterprise architecture have increased (by 15.7 percent on average) and 97 percent of them are planning several significant investments in the next two years.


There is reason to remain optimistic about the future of enterprise architects as a role. The value of the business architect profession is considered positive within organizations with 56 percent of architects who feel recognized internally. For 6 out of 10 architects, the profession offers both an increase in skills and development prospects.


In their strategic role to support business in an increasingly digitized economy, enterprise architects more than ever are the essential link between IT and business, and the leaders of digital transformation for organizations.
