The film follows Rhoda Williams, a brilliant young woman who is accepted into MIT's astrophysics program. She is distracted by the sight of the planet and crashes her car into another vehicle, killing a pregnant woman and her son, and putting the husband, John Burroughs, in a coma.

Four years later, Rhoda is released from prison and works as a janitor at her former high school. She is haunted by guilt and regret, and enters an essay contest sponsored by a millionaire entrepreneur who is offering a civilian space flight to the other Earth. She also visits John's house, intending to apologize, but pretends to be a maid instead. John, who has given up his career as a composer and lives in isolation, accepts her offer of cleaning his house. A relationship develops between them, but Rhoda does not reveal her true identity.
Rhoda wins the essay contest and is chosen to be one of the first to travel to the other Earth. John asks her not to go, believing they might have a future together. She finally decides to tell him the truth about who she is. He is furious and throws her out of his house. Rhoda hears an astrophysicist on TV explaining that the other Earth is a mirror of this one, but the synchronicity between them was broken when they first saw each other. She rushes back to John's house, but he refuses to let her in. She breaks into his house, and he begins to strangle her.
The film ends with a twist: Rhoda looks out of the window and sees another Rhoda standing on John's lawn. The other Rhoda has come from the other Earth, where she did not cause the accident that killed John's family.
